Foundation Subjects

At Downsview Community Primary School, we are proud to offer a broad and balanced curriculum that inspires our children, nurtures curiosity, and equips them with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed. The foundation subjects form a vital part of this curriculum, ensuring our pupils receive a well-rounded education that extends beyond English and maths.

Our Approach

We believe that high-quality teaching in foundation subjects encourages creativity, deep thinking, and a love for learning. Our curriculum is designed to be ambitious and accessible for all learners, including those with additional needs, and reflects our commitment to providing rich, inclusive learning experiences.

We follow the Kapow Primary scheme to deliver the majority of our foundation subjects. This carefully structured programme is fully aligned with the National Curriculum and supports the development of subject-specific knowledge, vocabulary, and skills in a progressive way from Year 1 to Year 6. Kapow enables our staff to deliver consistent and engaging lessons across:

  • Art and Design
  • Design and Technology
  • Computing
  • Music
  • French (Key Stage 2)
  • History
  • Geography
  • PSHE (taught through Kapow’s RSE & PSHE programme, aligned with statutory RSHE guidance)

Other Curriculum Areas

While Kapow supports most of our foundation subjects, we use other high-quality schemes in specific areas to ensure subject-specialist content and progression:

  • Science is taught using the Kent Primary Science Scheme, which provides hands-on, enquiry-based learning opportunities and aligns closely with the National Curriculum. It supports pupils to develop both substantive scientific knowledge and working scientifically skills.
  • PE is delivered through the PE Hub, a progressive and inclusive scheme that develops physical competence, teamwork, and healthy lifestyles. Our PE curriculum ensures coverage of all statutory areas including dance, gymnastics, invasion games, athletics and outdoor adventurous activities.
  • Religious Education (RE) is taught in line with the Kent Agreed Syllabus, which promotes understanding, tolerance, and respect for all worldviews. Through RE, pupils explore key beliefs, practices, and values across major world religions and learn to express their own responses thoughtfully.

Curriculum Progression and Subject Leadership

Each foundation subject is carefully mapped out to ensure clear progression across year groups. Our subject leaders play a crucial role in monitoring curriculum coverage, ensuring consistency, and supporting colleagues to deliver high-quality lessons. Through regular assessment and pupil voice, we evaluate the impact of our curriculum on children’s learning and adapt where necessary.

We are committed to providing children with opportunities to revisit, apply, and deepen their knowledge across the curriculum, preparing them for the next stage of their education and life in modern Britain.Curriculum Progression and Subject Leadership
